Blowing out candles means spitting on cakes to be eaten. After the Covid-19 era, will we continue to do it?

Covid-19 has influenced us all, and the world will not be the same as it was before 2020. Our habits have changed, but we must all try not to forget our traditions and customs, one of which is blowing out candles on birthday cakes.

It seems that ancient Greeks presented decorated cakes on some occasions. Candles on cakes often appeared in the 18th century in Germany at birthday celebrations for children (Kinderfest). Nowadays, we also celebrate in this way on adults’ and elders’ birthdays.

The practice of serving cake on birthdays is common in many cultures and countries in the world. Birthday cakes are often topped with small candles, and the number of candles often corresponds to the age of the individual being celebrated.

The cake is usually shown with all the candles lit, and often the guests sing “Happy Birthday to You” or an equivalent birthday song appropriate to the country where they are celebrating. At the conclusion of the song, the celebrant is traditionally prompted to blow out the candles and make a wish, trying to extinguish them all in a single breath. This means that it is compulsory to spit on the cake you are going to eat within a short time.

In June 2017, some researchers at Clemson University in the USA reported that people deposit a large number of germs, bacteria, and viruses onto a cake when blowing out the candles. They found that this act increases the amount of bacteria by 14 times.

After the Covid-19 era, is this now a big health concern? Yes, I think so.

We all know that every day we spit (and may spread Covid) when we speak, laugh, sing, or cough in front of parents, relatives, friends, and colleagues.

Why should we not do this anymore? Why should we lose this ritual?

This is why I have invented and patented a light and easy tool that extinguishes flames on cakes. Kids and elders still desire to blow out candles and participating people want loudly to sing on birthday flaming cakes, which are often positioned in the center of the table with a lot of people around it very near.

The tradition of blowing out candles must survive nowadays. It is a festive moment for our loved ones and for the celebrant too, but we must be safer and sure that we are not eating also what we have spitted on the candles and cake, maybe, also with the help of surrounded invited people.

I trust the tradition and ritual of blowing out candles on cakes must survive, and I hope it will still last for other millennials.
